Grapes

The first food in the list is grapes. Grapes have long been regarded as a satisfying fruit with a variety of advantages. However, the truth is that your dog does not benefit at all from it; only you do.

Prior to this, it was challenging to determine grape toxicity, but the veterinarians at the ASPCA Poison Control Centers (APCC) have provided an explanation for the 20-year-old mystery of why grapes are hazardous to dogs. It turns out that the tartaric acid in grapes causes symptoms in dogs like vomiting, diarrhoea and even kidney failure.

Some dogs experience an eccentric reaction after consuming just one to three grapes, while other dogs are not impacted at all. It might be due to the grapes’ varying quantities of tartaric acid. This depends on the type of grapes, the region in which they were cultivated, and how ripe they are. Therefore, if you ever see your dog eating a grape, it’s always a good idea to call animal poison control or your veterinarian right away.

Chocolate

Although it’s always fascinating to see a dog munching on chocolate in some TV commercials, the truth is that chocolates’ caffeine and theobromine content have a direct impact on your dog’s heart. The darker chocolates contain more of these two chemicals, making it even more dangerous. The chocolate could make your dog’s heart accelerate and blood pressure soar which may eventually lead to seizures and death.

Compared to larger dog breeds, smaller dog breeds are more vulnerable to its effects. Dark and sweet chocolate are therefore a big no-no for your dogs.

Garlic and Onions

As we all know, garlic is very healthy for people, but dogs metabolize food differently than humans do. Garlic contains a high amount of thiosulphate, which is extremely harmful to dogs. It is a digestive irritant that can make your dog throw up. Additionally, taking it in large doses has a direct impact on their red blood cells. You all know what red blood cells do; carry oxygen.  So be sure to keep the jar of minced garlic out of your dog’s reach from today onwards!

Onion

The allium family, which includes both onion and garlic, is particularly toxic to your dog. However, if it is properly cooked and given to them, is it truly harmful? Yes, is the answer! Your dog should not eat it, whether it is raw, processed, or cooked.  Typically, the toxic dose for your dog is more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions. To put it simply, your dogs are toxic to even minute amounts of onion. Red blood cells in dogs are immediately affected, rendering them incapable of transporting oxygen. This could also result in death. So, always recall to remove the onions from your dog’s supper.

Alcohol

Who in their right mind would give their cherished pet liquor is the first thought that comes to mind. However, the truth is that alcohol is hazardous to dogs not just in drinks but also in syrup and unbaked bread. Alcoholic beverages contain ethanol, which can make your dog overheat, pant excessively, get restless, tremble their muscles, and even experience convulsions. Therefore, it is your duty as a dog parent to keep your dog safe, which also includes placing your unfinished bottle of wine in a safe place.

Avocado

The fungicidal toxin persin, which is found in avocado, may be harmful to your dog. Veterinarians claim that dogs are more resistant to people than other animals but this does not necessarily mean that they can safely consume it. Even its leaves, barks, and seeds are regarded as harmful to dogs. If your dog consumes one of these, fluid may build up in their pancreas, abdomen and lungs, making it difficult for them to breathe.

This will deprive them of enough oxygen, which will cause further grave consequences. The same is true if your dog ingests avocado seeds; it could make the dog suffocate and have its digestive tract blocked. So be careful not to share your avocado toast with your dog starting tomorrow morning.

Dairy products 

On a sweltering summer day, wouldn’t it be alluring to share your ice cream with your dog? Even if it is, always remember that dogs have very little lactase, an enzyme that aids in the digestion of milk’s sugar. They may experience nausea, vomiting, bloating and food allergies if they consume too much dairy. On the other hand, your dog’s stomach may not necessarily be affected by modest levels of lactose in dairy products.

Therefore, it is okay to give your dog dairy products that contain little or no lactose. However, instead of giving your dog ice cream if you notice it panting from the heat, offer it a glass of cool water.

Macadamia Nuts

Although it’s not a common food, it can be found in baked goods like cookies, cakes, and muffins. The symptoms of eating macadamia nuts include weakness, tremors, ataxia, despondency, and fever. The inability to walk and unceasing shaking are examples of more severe symptoms. When consuming as little as 1/10 of an ounce for every 2 pounds of body weight, dogs can develop these symptoms. Therefore, if you feel like giving your dog even a small taste of Macadamia nuts, think again!

Cooked Bones 

Do you give your dog the bones from leftover chicken? If so, kindly halt right away. Cooked bones should never be given to your dog. When they transit through the digestive tract, they become brittle and readily shatter into sharp shards that can cause a lot of harm. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claims that between November 1, 2010 and September 12, 2017, it received reports of 90 dogs who were ill after ingesting commercially available smoked or baked bone treats. 15 of the dogs perished.

Although cooked bones are generally riskier than raw ones, it’s always better to have a close look. Dr. Becker advises choosing a raw bone that is roughly the size of your dog’s head if you want to offer your dog a bone so they can chew it for mental stimulation and to keep their teeth clean. This size of bone will allow your dog to nibble while lowering the possibility that he may swallow a piece of bone that could be harmful to its health.

Therefore, resist the urge to give your dog a nibble of the chicken bone on your plate even though they beg you to.

Salt

Although salt is a very important electrolyte for dogs, too much salt can cause salt toxicosis. Salt toxicosis is also known as hypernatremia. It’s the presence of high levels of sodium (salt) in the bloodstream. 

An electrolyte called sodium is generally present in the body in a regulated amount. However, when the blood’s sodium level becomes too high, it forces water out of the cells and back into the bloodstream to redress the balance. That can damage cells and have negative effects on the neurological system and brain of your dog. Your dog’s heart rate and blood pressure may both rise if they consume too much salt.
